Structure Fire

Box 1-1 - 1885 Baltimore Pike

06/29/99 at 06:48 hrs.

[Hot Shot Photo 1] Gettysburg Fire Department was dispatched to an early morning fire at the Golden Menu Chinese Restaurant. Upon arrival, no flames were visible, however, heavy smoke was pushing out of the eaves of the building. In this photo, as interior conditions of heat and smoke are rapidly deteriorating for initial two attack teams, firefighters Steve Carbaugh and Travis Parr work off the tip of Quint 1 to cut a ventilation hole in the roof.

[Hot Shot Photo 2] As crew establish a ventilation hole in the roof, Truck 1 sets up as well to assist with roof ventilation. Notice with the hole cut in the roof decrease in smoke pushing out of the first floor, and the increase of smoke venting out the roof. This allowed for conditions to improve for interior firefighters.

[Hot Shot Photo 3] In this photo, Littlestown Fire Department (Engine 20-1) arrives on scene to assist. Barlow Fire Co. (Engine 22-1) was used to supply water to Quint 1.

[Hot Shot Photo 4] In this photo, as the hole is being completed on the roof, conditions improve considerably on the first floor as more and more smoke pushes through the vent hole. Interior firefighters are now having difficulty making access to the second floor due to the stairway being burned out to the second floor.
