A late evening fire broke out at this egg farm around 10 pm on July 16th. Several Adams County fire departments were dispatched as well as Quint 1 from Gettysburg. This building was the center building of 5. It contained 167,000 chickens. The building was 520 feet by 50 feet. All five buildings were connected at the opposite end of the building as shown in this photo.

New Oxford Engine 13-1 was positioned at this end of the building. Engine 13-1, being supplied from dump tanks set up several hundred feet away, also supplied water to Quint 1. (All photos of this incident provided courtesy of Darryl Wheeler of the Gettysburg Times).

As crews set up to protect adjacent buildings from the fire, Quint 1 dropped 600 feet of 5 inch supply hose, and set up on the far end to stop the fire from spreading into tunnels at the other end of the structure. Due to limited access, Quint 1 set up on the opposite side of the adjacent building and directed its water tower over the adjacent building as seen in this photo.

Half of the building was fully involved upon arrival of first units on the scene.
