A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words

May 26, 2010

Recently the following photo was printed in a local news publication showing members of our department operating outside of our accepted safety practices. The Gettysburg Fire Department recognizes that firefighting in general is inherently dangerous, and that while there is an accepted risk, all efforts should be made to perform as safely as possible. As proud as we are of the efforts of our members, we accept that there is a time for our own humility as well. The following photo is posted as a learning tool for the fire service as a whole. The Gettysburg Fire Department does not condone or support this type of action. Those involved have been appropriately counseled.

Truck 1 Assists Pa Game Commission w/Owl Rescue
135 Park Ave

April 19, 2010

Around 13:45 hrs Communications received a call from the Pa Game Commission requesting assistance from the GFD to assist with tools to remove an OWL from a chimney.   With this request, Truck 1 (D/O Temarantz, Lt. Folster, FF's Jack Ferguson & Abraham) went on the air for the public service.  Upon arrival the crew was met by the PGC Officer who directed us to the roof of a 1 1/2 story SFD where we found a Barred Owl approx 20 feet down the chimney hungry and exhausted.  According to the homeowner , she began to hear a unusual sound coming from just above her fireplace that has not been used in many years but was not sure of the source until the OWL began to hoot after hearing another OWL calling from the tree in the backyard.  The homeowner was not sure how long the bird had been there and after hearing it for a day or so decided to contact the PGC, who responded and made several valiant attempts to make access to the bird from the interior of the home but were having no luck and requested the assistance of the GFD.

As Truck 1's crew discussed options with the PGC and Adams County Humane Society, D/C Shank arrived and assisted with some possible ideas on accessing the bird and after more than 30 mins it was decided to make attempts at snaring the bird from the top of the chimney.   Since our 12ft pike pole was a few feet short we used the handy dandy duct tape to secure the pike pole and snare pole together and lower it into the chimney with rope attached.  Even tho this OWL was tired and hungry he was still a Wise Ol' Owl and just wouldn't fall for our tricks at catching him as he hid just out of our sight and range but after making some noise from below he finally moved into position and we were able to SAFELY snag OL' WOODSY and bring him up and out of the chimney.  As the Owl was removed he appeared to be in good shape and unharmed.  The PGC Officer plaed the bird into a awaiting transport cage and transported him to a local vet where he would be evauluated and once examined be released back into the Pennsylvania woods.

Updated 4-23-10:  Per PGC Officer Grove, the Owl was released back into nature and reunited with its mate.  Officer Grove stated that the Owl received a clean bill of health and flew off without any problems.   Thank you to all persons involved for a job well done.

0125 hrs:  Co.1 alerted to Box 1-4, 1560 Chambersburg Rd for a MVC w/injury.  Chief 1 (Baldwin) arrived with a single vehicle off the side of the roadway that struck a utility pole, shearing it off at the base and the driver self-extricated walking around the roadway with no obvious injuries.  Rescue 1 (D/O Temarantz & FF P. Hartzell) along with FP responded and arrived on scene w/Rescue 1 being assigned hazard control & containment along with lighting.  After R1 investigated it was determined there were no significant hazards and Chief 1 held the Box to R1 & Fire Police until the vehicle was removed by the Towing Co.  The driver was taken into PD custody and transported to the hospital for evauluatiion.  Met-Ed was notified of the damaged pole and the Box placed in service @ 0216.

0607 hrs:  Truck 1 dispatched on the 2nd alarm assignment to Frederick Cty, Md to assist the Vigilant Hose Company (Emmitsburg, Frederick County Co. 6) for a working building fire with multiple persons trapped @ 2 E. Main Street in Emmitsburg.  Truck 1 responded with 4 (Chief Baldwin, D/O Hiller, Sgt Temarantz & FF P. Hartzell) and upon approaching the scene from US Route 15 a large column of heavy smoke could be seen.  Truck 1 arrived on scene of a large 3 story building with smoke from the 2nd  & 3rd floors as well as the attic area with on-scene units already in a defensive mode.  This building is an Icon within Emmitsburg as it dates back to the early 1800's. It once was a hotel and has significant historic value.  Command requested Truck 1 to setup in front of the side Bravo exposure building (PNC Bank) and make access to the roof.  Once on the roof there was no extension located as there was a large open space between the fire building and exposure.  The Truck 1 crew ventilated 3 windows on the fire buildings side B and placed ground ladders to the now open windows of the 3rd floor and numerous points on side A of the fire building .  Once the bulk of the initial fire was knocked down , crews re-entered and attempted to extinquish more fire and gain access via the interior stairs to the 3rd floor but due to changing conditions were once again evacuated.  At the request of Command, Truck 1 set up and utilized the flying standpipe from the tip of Truck 1's ladder to begin extinquishing the visible fire on the 3rd floor from the adjacent roof.  The truck crew stretched 2 1.75" atack lines from the standpipe.   With the fire progressing throughout the attic area at a rapid pace it was sometime before crews again re-entered to begin an agressive and prolonged overhaul.  Truck 1's crew assisted the interior crews with pulling ceilings and walls looking for any hidden fire while the Truck was repositioned to Side A of the fire building and was used to access the A/B corner for exterior overhaul.  After several hours of overhaul and other assignments, Truck 1 was released by Command @ 1227 hrs.   Later in the day and after a investigation by the Maryland Fire Marshalls Office a suspect was arrested and charged with Arson and numerous other charges.  To read more about this fire and view additional photos check out the following sites that had coverage of this Historic Fire:  Vigiliant Hose Company  http://www.vigilanthose.org, Frederick News Post (Multimedia)  http://www.fredericknewspost.com/media/slideshows/fire040410/index.html & www.statter911.com .  Thank you to the Frederick News Post for the use of their slideshow from the fire.

1424 hrs:  Shortly after personnel finished up cleaning tools and other equipment off of Truck 1 from the Emmitsburg fire, the pagers sounded once again alerting Co's 1, 19 (Bonneauville), 22 (Barlow) & 5 (Arendtsville) to Box 1 @ 152 N. Stratton St for an inside gas odor.  E1-1 (Chief Baldwin, D/O Stiltner & FF Noel) was out the door and on scene a few seconds after dispatch of a 2 story duplex with all occupants outside awaiting the FD who confirmed dispatched reports.  The crews from E1-1 & Truck 1 (DC Shank, D/O Temarantz, FF's Hiller & Abraham) checked both sides of the home and located a small leak in one of the gas lines coming into the reported address.  After shutting off the gas to the home and checking both sides with the 4-gas meter along with the Gas Co. being notified to respond and make necessary repairs the Box was placed in service @ 1445.

1620 hrs:  With units finally back in the station and personnel home, the dispatch was received for a vehicle fire in Box 22-2, 980 Taneytown Road alerting  E1-1 & Co. 22 (Barlow).  Dep Chief 22 (Hubbard) and E1-1 (Chief Baldwin, D/O Codori, Sgt. Temarantz and FF's Hiller & Laughman) were on the road within moments of dispatch and upon the arrival of DC-22 just ahead of the Engine he reported a fully involved vehicle fire.  E1-1 arrived,  pulled a 200' 1 3/4" handline and begin extinquishing the fire just as E22-1 arrived and assisted with a back up line.  As the fire was mostly knocked down and E1-1's crew came around to the drivers side of the vehicle to get better access to fire on the underside it was quickly learned that the fuel line and or fuel tank had ruptured and there was a pool of gas lying on the carriage causing the fire to re-ignite as the water was applied.  After several failed attempts with copious amounts of water , the Foam Pro-Pak was placed into service using approx 5 gals of foam from E1-1 and the fire extinquished.    E1-1 was released by Command 22 @ 1736 hrs after a quick overhaul.  Fire Police & Co. 22 remained on the scene to await the Towing Co. & Cumberland Twp EMA to inspect the run-off of fuel into a nearby yard.

1848 hrs:  Dep Chief Shank was contacted and dispatched via landline by Communications for a report of a possible outside gas odor in the area of the Gary Owen Pub @ 126 Chambersburg St.  DC-1 arrived in the area and investigated but was unable to locate any sources in or around the address but did have the Gas Co. respond to check further.

1928 hrs: Just as the Dep Chief cleared the investigation , Co. 1 was alerted to its final and 6th call of the day on a medical assist call with  EMS @ 210 W. High St.

Wet & Busy Day for Gettysburg

January 25, 2010

Starting around 0030 hrs on Monday Co. 1 received its 1st call of the day with an automatic alarm at the Gettysburg Hospital, shortly followed by a 2nd residential fire alarm on Waxwing Lane. During the night a heavy rain steadily drenched the area as well.

Residents of Gettysburg Borough and the surrounding communities awoke to find their once dry basements now becoming inundated with water. Many realized that their sump pumps couldn’t handle the large amount of water and that it was time to call for help.

At approximately 0800 hours the Adams County 911 Center started receiving calls for flooded basements and roadways in our 1st due at which time Chief 1 (Baldwin) was contacted and a work detail was dispatched. As calls began to accumulate, Chief Baldwin, Deputy Chief Shank and several other members established the GFD Emergency Operations Center at Co.1’s quarters and placed Truck 1 and Service 1 (towing the new pump trailer) on the street to begin pumping details. Traffic 1 began to handle traffic control for flooded roadways as well.

Truck 1 (Capt. Wasylyk, D/O Temarantz & FF Demko) and Service 1 (FF Hoffman & FF Rudisill) headed out to find many homes with several inches to a few feet of water in their basements. As the rain slowed and more members began to assist, Engine 1-1 (Lt. Folster & FF Abraham) was staffed and detailed to the Gettysburg College to begin drafting water out of the flooded steam heat transfer tunnel where it was estimated that approximately 150,000 gallons of water was collecting.

Upon realizing the depleting resources of Co. 1 along with the increased calls for service Chief Baldwin had several mutual aid companies (6, 9, 19, 20, 23, 27 & 29) dispatched to assist with the pumping. Engine 9-2 (York Springs) and Engine 23-2(Greenmount) were transferred to Co.1’s quarters for any additional emergency calls. Along with the pumping details, TK 1 responded to assist Frederick MD Co #6 (Emmitsburg) for smoke in the building, E1-1 handled an automatic alarm on Baltimore St., & E1-1 and TK 1 handled an alarm call on Montclair Rd.

As the day came to an end around 1730 hrs all GFD and mutual aid companies had completed their assignments and were returned to service. Approximately 47 calls were handled in less than a 24 hour period.

Many thanks to all mutual aid companies & GFD members for your help and dedication during this incident!
