0849 hrs 6-7-21 GFD / AREMS dispatched to Box 1-8 @ 2230 York Rd (Consolidated Scrap Resources) for a Vehicle Fire.
As units marked enroute, Adam’s County 911 updated the information to Deputy Chief 1 and responding units of multiple calls and reported explosions from multiple vehicles on fire inside the scrap yard. DC 1 requested an additional Engine and 2 Tankers be added. As additional reports were being received, DC1 requested a full first alarm assignment along with the working fire dispatch.

With a rapidly advancing fire in a scrap yard and limited water resources, numerous tankers were requested with an initial fill site set up at Adam’s County Prison. DC 1 just a short time after requested a 2nd alarm be struck bringing in additional Engines and Tankers. Chief 1 on the air and responding struck the 3 alarm shortly after the 2nd. Chief 1 requested that a pumper relay be set up to the nearest hydrant just over a mile away, with 6 Engines being utilized to complete the pumper relay. As personnel were in the process of fire suppression they had to evacuate the area as numerous explosions continued along with a loss of water. 2 additional mini-pumpers were requested and established a fill site set at a pond behind the property to supply Truck 1.

3 water supply fill sites were established that brought in over 3000 gallons of water per minute. Once water was established and a continuous water supply was in place, the fire was contained and with the help of employees on scene that were able to get their crane in operation, the pile of debris was pulled apart for extinguishment. Personnel / Apparatus flowed water for approximately 8hrs utilizing 3 aerial devices and apparatus mounted master stream devices each flowing approximately 1000gpm.
The Tanker shuttle operation offloaded just under a 100 loads of water with the average tanker being 2500 gallons.

1 member was transported by EMS for evaluation with several members treated on scene for heat exposure as temps were in the low 90’s on scene. No injuries to CSR employees.

The Fire was placed under control at 12:35 with extensive overhaul to take place. Numerous FD agencies on scene along with Adam’s County and Straban Twp EMA, DEP, OSHA, CSX Railroad Met-Ed, PSP, Adam’s Electric and the American Red Cross.

Crews operated until approximately 17:58hrs before clearing the scene.

Fire Cause: Accidental, not suspicious.

The Gettysburg Fire Department would like to thank Adam’s County 911 for the tremendous work of handling all the requests, ALL mutual aid Fire Departments from several counties and the State of MD, all support agencies, CSR employees, numerous local residents and small and large business for there generous supply of food/drink and use of facilities.
