By Gettysburg Fire
June 4, 2024

Shortly after 1:00 a.m. in the early morning of Tuesday, June 4, Gettysburg Fire and mutual aid fire companies were dispatched to Carlisle Street in Gettysburg for a working fire. Because this is a mixed-use building, with a retail store in the ground floor and residents on the second and third floors, it was dispatched as a commercial fire.

Gettysburg Engine 1-2 arrived on scene and found fire showing from a ground floor north-facing window. Crews confirmed all residents and occupants were evacuated from the building. Firefighters stretched a hoseline, made entry, and began fire attack. Engine 1-2's operator established a water supply at a nearby hydrant.

As additional fire apparatus arrived, secondary and backup hoselines were deployed. Crews accessed the second and third floors as well as the basement to check for any fire extension. Significant overhaul was performed to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

This incident demonstrates the teamwork shown by Adams County's emergency responders and agencies. Along with Gettysburg Fire, crews and agencies included United Hook & Ladder, Cashtown Community Fire Department, Greenmount Fire Company, Alpha Fire Company, Bendersville Community Fire Company, Barlow Fire Company, Arendtsville Community Fire Company, Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Services, York Springs Fire Company, units from Hanover, PA and Frederick County, MD, Adams Regional EMS, and law enforcement.

No injuries were reported by either occupants, responders, or others. Building residents were displaced and plan to stay elsewhere. The cause of the fire is currently undetermined.
