The Gettysburg Fire Department has reached a historic milestone in its long history since its establishment in 1808. As of December 1, 2025, the department has responded to 1,000 emergency calls this year—its busiest year to date. The total had increased to 1,010 calls as of December 4, marking the highest number of calls ever recorded by the department, with several weeks remaining in the year.
This accomplishment reflects the dedication and commitment of the department’s volunteers, who work tirelessly to ensure every emergency call is answered each day. Their service, both on the front lines and behind the scenes, is vital to the safety and well-being of the Gettysburg community. The department expresses its deepest appreciation to all volunteers, whose efforts make this level of service possible.
That is a shocking and extraordinary number of emergency calls! I had no idea. Thanks so much to all the brave volunteers for fighting fires. I thankyou all for your service! I also thank you for providing educational prevention services. I have brought children to your fall open houses and found them to be engaging and informative. I appreciate assistance today from Chief Scott McGonigal who promptly called me to answer a question about smoke detectors. Thank you Chief McGonigal!
