October 3-4, 2015 marks the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the official national tribute honoring all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. Thousands attend the Memorial Service, held in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Gettysburg Fire Department was honored to assist with the Families Motorcade from Gettysburg to Emmitsburg. GFD Apparatus led the procession south on US15, along with motor patrol officers from the Frederick County Sheriffs Office. Fire apparatus from Gettysburg, Barlow and Greenmount Fire Companies were staged on each overpass. GFD Fire Police provided assistance with the motorcade and traffic control, assisted by Fire Police from Alpha Fire Company 20 and Barlow Company 22.
At 1:00pm, Gettysburg Fire Department held a brief ceremony led by Fire Chief Hurshel Shank as part of "Bells Across America." Bells ring from coast to coast this weekend as part of the National Firefighters Memorial Weekend. The Bells Ceremony was the opening event of GFD's open house, and many members of the community as well as members of the company paid tribute to our fallen comrades. After short remarks, all recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence as the Company 1 bell tolled.
