| Gettysburg Fire Department responded to a detached garage fire early Monday morning that resulted in the total loss of both the structure and a vehicle inside.
Firefighters were dispatched at 4:15 a.m. on March 2, 2026, to 1092 Chambersburg Road for a reported car fire inside a two-car detached garage. Upon investigation, crews determined the fire was caused by a propane heater that had been left on overnight, which ignited a vehicle. The fire then extended throughout the garage structure.
Approximately 18 units from Gettysburg Fire Department and mutual aid departments responded to the scene. The fire was declared under control at 4:41 a.m.
No civilians were injured in the incident. One firefighter was transported to Gettysburg Hospital for smoke inhalation after inhaling smoke while operating outside the structure as he was connecting his air supply. He was treated and released.
The garage and vehicle are considered a total loss.
Gettysburg Fire Department urges residents to never leave portable heating devices unattended and to ensure proper ventilation when using propane heaters in enclosed spaces. |
